Brits are set to scorch this summer as temps rise even further for the hottest summer on record due to ‘African roasts’

Britain is set for four “blowtorch” summer heatwaves and a record 40C meltdown in the hottest summer on record amid African roasts.

The Met Office predicted early summer scorchers in a hot three months to the start of August. After the record 35C spring meltdown, the first summer heatwave is due from June 10. 30C-plus highs are due. Two further swelters are expected in July, with a fourth in August. Forecasters said heat will peak from late July amid hot air plumes from Africa, with the 40.3C UK record under threat.

Bookmakers Coral slashed the odds on the hottest summer on record to 1 /2 odds-on and record 40C highs to 2/1. Coral spokesman David Stevens said: “The odds are wilting faster than sun-frazzled Brits.”

The hottest summer on record was in 2025.

Britain’s hottest temperature ever recorded was the 40.3C (104.5F) on July 19, 2022, at Coningsby, Lincs.

Summer will also see some unsettled conditions at times. The Met Office outlook to the start of August said: “There is an increase chunks of warm conditions and heatwaves.”

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “The remarkable spring heat is just the start.

“30C plus is expected again in mid-June, with two hot spells in July and another in August.

“The high 30s are quite likely from the second half of July.

“There is an increased chance of breaking the 40.3C record, with early season heat and rapidly warming land and sea plus plumes of blowtorch heat from southern Europe and Africa ahead.

“Last summer was the hottest on record, but with El Nino increasing background temperatures, there is a higher probability of this year seeing a new hottest summer on record.”

BBC Weather said: “Mid-June has the potential for hot temperatures.”
