As Look Mum No Computer gears up to represent the UK at this year’s Contest in Vienna, Germany’s embassy to the UK has said it will be backing us as we hope for a good result

First it was the darts, then it was the football – now the UK could be about to score some big points in the Eurovision Song Contest from Germany.

With the final of the Contest taking place on Saturday (May 16), British act Look Mum No Computer is hoping to charm audiences and save the UK from the dreaded ‘nil points’ and our usual place at the bottom of the scoreboard. This could now be done thanks to singer Sam Battle’s track Eins, Zwei, Drei.

The synthpop masterpiece, which talks about the struggle to break out of the typical 9-5 day, has already made history as the first British song not to be completely in English. And it seems the Germans are thrilled with the choice to switch things up.

In a statement given to the Daily Star, Germany’s embassy in the UK has said they will be backing singer Sam Battle as he sings in German in front of nearly 200 million people. This comes despite major pushbacks from some who demanded it be entirely in English.

“UK-German relations are at an all-time high − and not just because Thomas Tuchel is doing an amazing job managing England!” they said. “On top of that we now have a UK Eurovision entry that is partly in German.

“That’s UK-German friendship in action! Learning German is fun and surprisingly easy. After this year’s Eins, Zwei, Drei, maybe the UK’s 2027 Eurovision entry might even count into double digits: ‘Zehn, Elf, Zwölf’!

“Either way, at the Embassy we’ll be cheering the UK all the way to a very respectable second place − just behind Germany, of course.” It comes as Sam admitted that he debated singing in Welsh at the Contest, but found it too difficult to sing in.

Speaking to That Eurovision Site at the opening ceremony, Sam admitted that he wanted to represent the UK just a little more. He explained: “I was trying to fit Welsh but it didn’t quite fit.

“But I feel good about my track,” he added. “I like pushing the boat out, finding the little wiggle of things to make things a bit more individual.”

Look Mum No Computer will be competing at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna on Saturday. Rylan and Angela Scanlon will be providing commentary for the semi-finals, while Graham Norton will be back in the booth for the final.

The show has not been without controversy, however, after five countries − including Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands − pulled out of the Contest over Israel’s inclusion. A total of 35 countries will be hoping to lift the glass trophy this weekend.
