Mark Selby finally got his hands on the British Open trophy as he secured an emphatic victory over John Higgins in the final. The 41-year-old rattled off three straight frames at the end of the match to wrap up 10-5 triumph and end his 18-month wait for a ranking title.

He needed to dig in at times, with Higgins capitalising on his mistakes to keep himself in with a shout of pulling off a comeback. However, it was too little, too late in the end with Selby ensuring his quality shone through at the business end of the contest.

Speaking on ITV after the match, he said: “I played great today from start to finish. I don’t feel as though I made too many mistakes. I missed a red in the corner on the seventh frame and John ended up pinching it, but I kept going and kept my focus. When I had my chances, I took them.

“Winning any tournament is special because the standard is so tough. I’ve got so much respect for John and his family as well. He’s one of the all-time greats and every time I play hiim I relish the moment because he is an absolute legend.”
