Arsenal have announced Ozil has signed a new contract that will tie him to the club until 2021 and see him become their highest-earner on wages of £350,000 a week.
The Germany international’s decision to stay at the Emirates has come as a surprise with many expecting him to join Manchester United as a free agent in the summer.
But the Manchester Evening News claim he has penned a contract extension with the Gunners because of what United did to him during negotiations.
It is said United were in talks with Ozil about a move in the summer.
The Red Devils already raided Arsenal for one star last month, swapping Henrikh Mkhitaryan to secure the signature of Alexis Sanchez.
But the MEN say United were never seriously interested in bringing Ozil to Old Trafford.
It is said they greeted him with a wall of silence when Ozil wanted to know what their decision was.
And when United failed to get in touch, the 29-year-old ultimately decided to stay put.
Ozil has since taken to Twitter to explain why he decided to stay at Arsenal – and why negotiations over a new contract took so long.
“Proud to announce: I signed dat thing….three more years with Arsenal!” he said.
“It’s been one of the most important decisions of my footballing career and that’s why I had to think hard and talk with everyone who’s important to me…good things take time!
“In the end I let my heart decide.
“As I always said, I feel at home here and I’m highly motivated to achieve big things in the next few years. Once a Gunner, always a Gunner!”
Ozil’s first game for Arsenal since the deal will be their 5.30pm match against Everton on Saturday.
