Scottie Scheffler has come under fire for his actions after Rory McIlroy’s victory at the Masters, with only the chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club, Fred Ridley, appearing to congratulate the new champion.
During the indoor ceremony, Ridley asked Scheffler to present McIlroy with his green jacket, the world No. 1 placed the jacket around the World No. 2, who replied: “Thanks, Scottie.”
Ridley then congratulated the 35-year-old and extended his hand for a handshake. However, by that point, Scheffler was spotted moving backwards and then walking out of shot, and therefore he was not available to shake the hand of his rival.
Fans were quick to point out how quickly Scheffler had fled from the scene, with one writing on X: “What’s the story with Scottie? Not even a ‘well done’ and just melted away. Very awkward.” Others added: “Very poor from Scheffler,” and “Scheffler classless never opened his mouth or shake hands put jacket on and legged it.”
