Blind saw his move to Roma scuppered on transfer deadline day after Manchester United demanded the deal be a permanent one.

Roma were only willing to loan the Netherlands international, who is out of favour at Old Trafford.

But any glimmer of hope over a compromise at the 11th hour has being ruined after Roma confirmed the arrival of Argentinian left-back Jonathan Silva.

Silva, 23, joins the Rome club on loan from Sporting Lisbon for the rest of the season.

There is a view to buy on the deal, which effectively ends any future hope of Blind leaving United for Roma.

“I am very happy to have arrived in Rome, for me it is incredible,” Silva told

“I am very motivated. I want to contribute to this great group of players.”

Blind was not in the squad for Manchester United’s clash at Tottenham tonight as he eyed a deal away from the Red Devils.

Only when Roma heard of United’s demands did they turn to Silva instead.

Speaking earlier today about the failed move, , said: “Time is running out because it’s the last day of the transfer window.

“Yes, I can confirm that Roma want him but Manchester United don’t want to let him go on loan, only on a permanent basis.

“They don’t want to sell him now, only in the summer. The price is good, but the operation is difficult.

“It’s really difficult because Manchester United want to keep him to play in the Champions League, the Premier League and the FA Cup.”
