Manchester United have been tipped to rescue Asensio from his Real Madrid nightmare in recent months with the Spain international currently struggling for game time at the Bernabeu.

A bright start to the current campaign – where he bagged back to back stunners in the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona – had made way to a midseason blip.

Despite Los Blancos struggling, Zinedine Zidane has regularly overlooked Asensio – leading to talk the 22-year-old may be about to turn his back on the club he loves.

And Spanish outlet Don Balon say Manchester United are sure they can succeed where Real failed by getting the best out of the player.

Mourinho is supposedly a huge fan of Asensio.

The player arrived at Real after the 54-year-old’s time at the Bernabeu.

But that has supposedly not stopped Mourinho from wondering what his side may look like with Asensio in his ranks.

Don Balon say Asensio is the chosen player that Mourinho wants should Real come calling for David De Gea in the summer.

And that is something Los Blancos are expected to do.

Their interest in De Gea dates back to three years ago, when Louis van Gaal ruled the roost at Old Trafford.

Real looked to have a deal wrapped up with Keylor Navas heading the other way.

However, the transfer fell through with Real blaming United for failing to produce the right paperwork in time.

Speaking last month, Mourinho urged United to tie De Gea down to a new contract.

“The option? It’s obvious that we’re not going to let the option disappear,” he said, referring to the club’s option to extend the player’s contract automatically by a further year.

“A goalkeeper like he is and a club that wants to be better and better and better, we are not going to let that year option go away.”
