Tottenham head to Anfield on Sunday (4.30pm) on the back of a 2-0 victory against Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will be hoping to pick up from where they left off against Huddersfield where they emerged 3-0 winners.
But Sherwood thinks it will be a tricky tie for the hosts and has backed his former side to come out on top.
That is despite Spurs having only won one match in their last 20 against teams from the top six of the Premier League.
“They will both go toe-to-toe and really try to win the football match,” Sherwood told Sky Sports’ The Debate.
“Both sides always look to play on the front-foot and we will see goals.
“They have both got very attacking options and I would give Tottenham the edge.
“I know they have got a very poor record away from home against the top six sides.
“I think it is going to be a fantastic game and it’s a chance for Tottenham to leapfrog Liverpool and get in them Champions League places because that is what they’re aiming for.
“Liverpool are a very good side and Mohamed Salah is on fire at the moment.
“Virgil van Dijk was also a good signing but he may take a little time to embed.
“If Van Dijk handles Harry Kane then I will give them the edge, but I do think Tottenham will cause them problems.”
