McGregor, 29, hasn’t set foot inside the Octagon since claiming the UFC lightweight title in the main event of UFC 205.
Fourteen months have passed since that historic night at Madison Square Garden, which saw the Irishman become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles simultaneously, and McGregor has yet to make a serious move to return to the Octagon.
His lengthy hiatus from the cage led to the introduction of an interim lightweight title, which Tony Ferguson claimed last October at UFC 216.
It has also resulted in the UFC brass contemplating stripping him of the lightweight title, an act the promotion’s president Dana White recently suggested may have already happened.
The UFC are desperate to get their poster boy back in the Octagon as soon as possible but have yet to entice him with a lucrative new contract.
McGregor is keen to be given shares in the promotion before making his long-awaited return to the cage and has revealed he is still negotiating a new deal with his employers.
“I’m currently in the negotiation stage,” he said at an event to honour his work with the New York’s Children Medical Research Foundation.
“There are multiple opponents on the platform.”
Ireland’s first UFC belt holder then revealed that he still harbours hope of rematching Floyd Mayweather, who has recently hinted he’s willing to rematch ‘The Notorious’ in an MMA bout.
“Of course I would love to get that one [against Floyd Mayweather] back,” he added.
“I felt I went into his realm and I felt handy early on, he had to wait for me to get tired.”
McGregor’s first fight back in the UFC is expected to see him take on the winner of the upcoming lightweight bout between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov, which headlines UFC 223 in April.
