- A lawsuit filed against Lovense says the company collected data on customers
- A corresponding app allows users to control the company’s products remotely
- The lawsuit claims the company has collected ‘intimate’ details about buyers
- It also alleges that the company can link customers’ habits with their identities
A class-action lawsuit filed earlier this week claims that vibrator manufacturing company Lovense, based in Hong Kong, has been collecting data on customers.
The suit does not name any of the plaintiffs, who allege that the features in Lovense’s products allowed the company to collect and store ‘highly intimate and sensitive data regarding consumers’ personal use of its vibrators.
Among these details are ‘the date and time of each use and the selected vibration settings’, according to the suit.

Lovense’s products correspond with an app called Body Chat that allows users, or their partners, to control their vibrators remotely via a Bluetooth connection.
They can sync their vibrators to a playlist and choose vibration intensity and patterns, among other options.
Lovense brands its products as ideal for participants of long distance relationships, stressing that all of their features can be controlled remotely.
In addition to collecting ‘intimate’ data on Lovense users, the plaintiffs allege that the company is able to connect users’ data with their identity, claiming that their email addresses used to download Body Chat can be linked to their personal usage habits.
The suit says that Lovense ‘[failed] to notify or warn customers that the Body Chat App monitors and records, in real time, how people use these intimate devices and transmits the collected private usage information to its servers.
‘Nor does Defendant seek consent before it begins collecting and transmitting.’
The law suit says Lovense used their app to ‘secretly collect intimate details about its customers’, their email addresses included.
The new lawsuit is not the first complaint brought against Lovense.
In 2015, a security firm said the company’s products were at risk of being hacked and cautioned that they were not secure.
