The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers is in Washington DC for Charles’ controversial state visit, and believes his sense of duty to the monarchy will overpower the frenzy around his Stateside trip

For all the hysteria surrounding the royal visit to the United States of America, there are two people who will take it in their stride – our King and Queen. This is the King’s 20th official visit to US and he is well versed in dealing with the often turbulent nature of this country.

Last minute security arrangements put in place to safeguard Charles and Camilla following Saturday’s mayhem in Washington have resulted in a ring of steel being put round the royals. But for the King and Queen it’s very much a case of ‘keep calm and carry on’.

While a chorus of discontent surrounding this controversial trip has grown in recent weeks, against a backdrop of President Trump’s war in the Middle East and arguments over tariffs and even the Falkland Islands, the visit has been years in the planning.

Buckingham Palace earmarked the 250th anniversary of US independence in the King’s diary long ago and now more than ever, the monarch is intent on honouring this side of his public duty.

Last year, Charles clocked up more engagements at home and abroad than any other member of the royal family. Despite living with cancer for more than two years, he has carried on at a relentless pace, which shows no sign of slowing down.

He is acutely aware of his age, the requirements made to live with his condition and the time available to him to cement a legacy as sovereign befitting a life in public service.

On the face of it, the King and Trump could not be more different.

The two men vary wildly on discourse, honesty, integrity, global cohesion, the environment – I could go on.

Yet, as we clearly saw when the King and Queen hosted the President and the First Lady, there is a reverence reserved for very few people, let alone world leaders.

The real proof will be if Trump dials down his disgraceful threats to Britain as a result of the King deploying all the diplomacy needed to fill the cracks in the so-called special relationship.
