The supernatural movie, which is the true story of Sarah Winchester – the widow of gun manufacturer William Winchester – releases tomorrow, and shows a woman haunted by severe grief.
“There’s a lot of mythology around Sarah Winchester,” Mirren said, in the featurette above.
We see her having received millions in inheritance, and convincing herself she is cursed by those who died as a result of the firearms her husband made.
She begins building a huge mansion, which is where she believes she is haunted by their spirits.
“Building this house does come from the rifle fortune,” Mirren added. “An instrument of death and war – that’s what our film explores.
Directors the Spierig Brothers said: “We loved [this story] about a woman who is haunted by spirits that had been killed at the hands of this rifle.
“We didn’t see her as [a crazy person], we saw her as someone who is plagued by this legacy; this gun.”
Mirren is joined in the cast by Jason Clarke and Sarah Snook.
She has several other projects coming up this year: she’ll be in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms with Disney; co-starring Keira Knightley and Morgan Freeman.
She’s also currently filming a French crime thriller called Anna, alongside Luke Evans and Sasha Luss.
Winchester is out tomorrow.
