SEGA gives Out Run fans renewed hope of new release with latest launch | Gaming | Entertainment

SEGA fans and lovers of all things retro have reason to be hopeful this week, as the iconic video game company launches a new website dedicated to a number of its classic titles. Accompanied by the tagline ‘no old, stay gold’, the newly launched SEGA Universe website focuses on a number of titles that are celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2026. This includes games like Out Run and Streets of Rage, as well as Fantasy Zone, Nights Intro Dreams and Guardian Heroes.

While it’s unclear what SEGA has planned for these games in the next 12 months, the website suggests that at the very least we may get some new merchandise based on some of its most iconic titles.

“Games and characters born in the past,” reads a post on the SEGA Universe website (via VGC).

“Transcending generations and borders, they continue to live on in the same universe—even today.

“Beyond games, expanding into film, music, fashion, and even further forms of entertainment. While changing form, the experience is constantly updated. Everything created here remains in someone’s memory and is passed on to the next generation.”

Another section specifically describes the history of the nine games that are about to celebrate an anniversary.

It begins with cute-em-up shooter Fantasy Zone and arcade racing game Out Run, which both turn 40 in 2026.

Streets of Rage and Rent a Hero are both celebrating their 35th anniversary, while Guardian Heroes, Nights, Dynamite Deka and Sakura Wars are 30.

Finally, Japanese simulation RPG Segagaga is turning 25, having originally launched back in 2001.

As a big fan of Out Run, I’m really hoping fans will be treated to a new game or some sort of collection featuring the entire series.

While there have been multiple near-arcade perfect ports of the original Out Run, games like OutRunners and Turbo OutRun haven’t received the same love.

OutRunners, for example, was ported to the SEGA Mega Drive, but with forced split-screen for some unknown reason.

Of course, Streets of Rage has made a comeback in recent years. Not only can fans pick up the excellent Streets of Rage 4 on modern platforms, but SEGA is working on a brand new sequel, alongside Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio.
