We’re just days away from the hotly-anticipated open beta for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. After waiting years for a Marvel fighting game, the new title from Arc System Works and Sony is launching in a few weeks.

Marvel Tokon lands on PC and PS5 on August 6, finally giving Marvel fans some new fighting action. But before that, there’s the small matter of an open beta that’s free to play. Here’s everything you need to know.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls open beta release date and time

The Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Open Beta starts on July 24 at 4pm JST – that’s 8am BST or 12am PT. It’ll remain open for a 72-hour period, offering a full weekend of fighting.

The open beta will close at 7.59am BST or 3.59pm JST on Monday, July 27 (or 11.59pm PT on Sunday, July 26).

How do I play the Marvel Tokon open beta?

While Sony stress that a PlayStation Plus subscription isn’t required to try the open beta, all players – regardless of whether they’re on PC or PS5 – will need a PlayStation account. No registration is required before downloading the open beta.

To access it on PC, players can download the open beta directly from Steam or the Epic Games Store. A pre-download is available two hours before the beta goes live.

PS5 players just need to download the beta from the PS5 console store. Again, the two-hour pre-load period applies for those extra keen to play as soon as possible.

What’s in the open beta?

Gamers will find six stages to do battle on. They are:

• Marvel’s New York (Day)
• Marvel’s New York (Night)
• Savage Land
• X-Mansion
• Knowhere
• Wakanda

A total of five game modes are available for players to try out. The main mode is Online Casual and Ranked Matches, which allows players to fight against others around the world.

Casual Matches allows gamers to play against opponents of a similar skill level, while Ranked offers a chance to climb the competitive ladder. There’s also Versus Mode, which allows players to battle local against friends on the same system or practice offline against the CPU.

Two training modes are included. Start Up Battle is an interactive tutorial designed to teach player the basics of Marvel Tokon’s 4v4 tag combat and concludes with a trial match, while a dedicated Training Mode offers a practice area to sharpen skills and experiment with characters.

For the first time, Sony and Arc System Works have included a snippet of the game’s Episode Mode. The first three chapters of the Amazing Guardians storyline are available.

The story follows Spider-Man as he begins assembling his team to confront a mysterious threat descending upon Earth. The narrative is presented using motion-comic storytelling that seamlessly blends into the game’s battles.

Finally, the Open Lobby gives players a social hub between battles to customise their avatars, chat with other players and challenge players to matches at fights at arcade cabinets.

Which characters are playable in the open beta? Full list

Almost all of the final game’s characters are playable in the open beta. Players will be able to pick from 15 of the final 20 – including Blade, who is available for the first time.

The characters are divided into the following factions:

• Fighting Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, and Black Panther
• Unbreakable X-Men: Storm, Magik, Wolverine, and Danger
• Amazing Guardians: Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Peni Parker
• Samurai Outriders: Ghost Rider and Blade
• Knights of Doom: Doctor Doom and Magneto
