JK Rowling stunned the world when she casually revealed Dumbledore’s sexuality.
Fans quickly embraced the news about Harry Pottter’s beloved mentor and the author also revealed that the wizard had a tragic affair with Gellert Grindewald when they were young men.
The fantastic Beasts sequel will finally show Jude Law as the wizard in his early days, with Depp as the lover-turned-enemy.
Previously Rowling teased: “As far as his sexuality is concerned… watch this space.” But how much of their relationship will make it onto the screen in the second of five movies?
Disappointingly (and rather predictably) the director has some bad news…
David Yates just revealed all to Entertainment Weekly and was asked if he would depict Dumbledore’s sexuality on screen.
He said: “Not explicitly. But I think all the fans are aware of that (his sexuality). He had a very intense relationship with Grindelwald when they were young men. They fell in love with each other’s ideas, and ideology and each other.”
This is sure to disappoint fans.
Nobody is expecting a gay sex scene in the movie, just as there have not been any heterosexual ones throughout the franchise. However, the Hary Potter series and the first Fantastic Beasts film all featured prominent romances and pairings.
It seems a shame that Dumbledore won’t have the same, however Yates was quick to stress how energising the character will be.
He added: “He’s a maverick and a rebel and he’s an inspiring teacher at Hogwarts. He’s witty and has a bit of edge. He’s not this elder statesman. He’s a really kinetic guy. And opposite Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, they make an incredible pairing.”
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is out on November 16, 2018.
