Today marks the real life Groundhog Day, when Punxsutawney Phil, a Groundhog predicts the remaining weeks of winter at Gobbler’s Knob in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.
In the film – which is 25 years old this year – Murray’s character, weatherman Phil, is trapped in a time loop, reliving the same day every day.
At first he just embraces it with a life of hedonism, but soon gets fed up and tries to commit suicide multiple times, only to wake up to Sonny & Cher’s I Got You Babe every morning.
Of course he eventually exits the time loop, but how long was he trapped for?
The BBC polled 253 film critics from 52 countries for the definitive list of the 100 greatest comedies.
Beating Groundhog Day in the top three were Annie Hall and Dr Strangelove, while Some Like It Hot came out on top.
