The boss of Santander has insisted he is the right man to lead the firm’s drive into business banking despite holding a top job at RBS as it drove small firms to the brink.

Nathan Bostock, now chief executive of Santander UK, oversaw RBS’s global restructuring group, which was accused of deliberately wrecking companies it was supposed to save.

Asked about his former role, the 57-year-old said he would cooperate with the FCA as the City watchdog prepares to publish its report into the GRG’s mistreatment of firms. ‘I am leading a push into businesses and into SMEs,’ he added.

The remarks came as Santander reported a 5 per cent slide in annual profits to £1.8bn, after Carillion’s collapse sent impairments up to £203m.
