Computer bungle: Thousands face being charged the wrong amount of tax by HMRC

Thousands face being charged the wrong amount of tax due to a computer bungle at HM Revenue & Customs.

A letter from HMRC to accountants, seen by Money Mail, shows the software is making errors in calculating bills.

It means some people will have paid too much or too little. They face waiting for refunds or extra bills.

Those affected include pensioners taking advantage of the tax-free savings allowance of £1,000, introduced in 2016.

Experts say the software used to calculate tax through the self-assessment system has not kept up with changes.

HMRC says a ‘very small proportion’ are affected and it will ‘proactively correct’ errors.
