One person who believed the conspiracy was former police officer Monte Nicholson.
Monte – who worked in the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department for 19 years – was approached soon after Elvis’ death by a man who claimed to have worked with the iconic singer.
The former cop appeared on 1990 documentary The Elvis Files – which has been re-posted to YouTube this month – to speak about the encounter.
“One day, he showed up at work and had pictures of Elvis Presley getting in a helicopter which looked like a government helicopter,” Monte said.
“There were men surrounding Elvis that looked like government agents.
“The curious thing about this picture is this individual claimed it was taken several hours after Elvis allegedly died at Graceland.”
The bizarre claim sparked curiosity in Monte and he started investigating theories behind Elvis’ death.
But things took a mysterious turn when he tried to contact the individual with the photos.
A reenactment of what happened was shown on The Elvis Files.
At first, Elvis’ “former worker” denied ever having the photos, before saying it would “cost” Monte to see them again.
They finally agreed to meet up at an address given by the man but when Monte showed up, the house was vacant and there was no sign of him.
Both the man and the photos were never seen again.
The experience led Monte to write The Presley Arrangement in 1987, which set out to prove the wild claims that Elvis was, in fact, still alive.
It comes after Elvis’ cousin, Gene Smith, revealed the five things that were wrong with The King’s body at his funeral, in an unearthed video.
