The Aldi store in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, temporarily changed its name to ‘Aldeh’ to mark the Oasis reunion gigs at Heaton Park – but many fans don’t want it to slide away
A petition has been launched to make a rebranded ‘Aldeh’ supermarket sign permanent in honour of Oasis and Manchester’s heritage. Ahead of Oasis reuniting, supermarket Aldi changed the name of its Bury New Road store in Prestwich to ‘Aldeh’, embracing the Mancunian pronunciation of its name.
The store is just a stone’s throw away from Heaton Park, where Oasis are playing five of their Manchester gigs on their sell-out, era-defining tour.
The sign has proved incredibly popular amongst the general public and Oasis fans, generating worldwide fame, with visitors flocking to the store and social feeds abuzz with images and chatter about the sign.
In light of this, Manchester local Ella Curtis has written a petition calling on Aldi to make the store sign permanent as a tribute to Manchester’s cultural legacy to music and British culture more broadly, and how the city and Oasis helped define a generation.
She also states, as a proud Mancunian, she’s seen the reaction and the effect the sign has had firsthand, in sparking something genuinely positive.
The sign is already listed as a cultural landmark on Google, with 5 star reviews.
The supermarket have issued a response on social media saying, “Boss said we also need 10,000 likes and a comment from one of the Gallaghers”.
The petition is viewable here. Ella finishes off her petition by saying that, the “Aldeh” sign might have started as a temporary campaign, but it’s come to mean something more – to the city and its people, and to anyone who recognises the power of music and place. She urges the supermarket to consider keeping it in place as a permanent tribute.
The altered name was a hit among fans with one commenting: “Just on my way to do my weekly shop and what do I see? Aldeh! It’s absolutely brilliant.”
Another fan wrote: “Oasis are coming home and this hilarious tribute tops it off… it’s a great time to be in Manchester!”.
Oasis kicked off their reunion tour on July 4, before heading to Heaton Park, their last performance venue, for five gigs between July 11 and July 20. However, Aldi isn’t the only one in Prestwich gearing up for the band’s return.
A recent sighting revealed a “pop-up campsite” in a local resident’s back garden, charging gig-goers a whopping £480 per night to pitch their tents during the Heaton Park concerts.
It comes as Noel and Liam have reportedly denied the team working behind the scenes on their highly anticipated reunion tour upcoming tour free tickets.
Typically, friends and family gig tickets are given to the dedicated team as a token of appreciation, considering they’ll be on the road for months while the band tours the UK and later embarks on a series of international dates.
