A tragic double loss of life has occurred at two popular beaches in Cornwall, where two women got into difficulty while in the water.

On Sunday, a woman in her 50s was rescued from the sea at Portreath beach, near St Ives, but sadly passed away after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest. Despite paramedics’ efforts, she could not be revived. Just hours later, the body of another woman was discovered at Porthcothan beach, near Padstow. It is believed she had been swimming when she encountered difficulties, and her body was found face down in the water.

The incidents unfolded in front of many witnesses, as the beaches were crowded with people enjoying the warm weather. The RNLI played a key role in the emergency response, but unfortunately, neither woman could be saved.

In the wake of the tragedies, authorities have issued a warning about the dangers of the sea, especially as people seek to cool off during the hot summer months, reports the Mirror.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police expressed their condolences to the families and loved ones of the two women, saying: “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of both women at this incredibly difficult time. There is no indication that the two incidents are connected.”

According to the Force Incident Manager, police were alerted to the first incident at Portreath beach at approximately 12:35 pm on Sunday, following a report from the South Western Ambulance Service Trust.

Police have been called to assist paramedics at the beach, which was extremely busy at the time of the incident.

Neither women have been formally identified yet.

This recent incident follows the tragic death of a woman in her 60s at Skegness beach on Friday, August 8. Emergency services were alerted at 5.39pm after reports of a person struggling in the sea.

A multi-agency response involving the Coastguard, RNLI, Lincolnshire Police, and East Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save her, the woman was pronounced dead after being pulled from the water.

According to the RNLI, CPR was attempted on the beach. The deceased’s next of kin have been notified.

Lincolnshire Police confirmed the incident, stating: “We received a call from the Coastguard at 5.39pm today (August 8) reporting that they had rescued a woman who had got in difficulty in the sea at Skegness.

“The woman, aged in her 60s, was brought onto shore but sadly she died. Her next of kin are aware. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”
