Ocean Valentine began the inappropriate relationship with the teenage student, with the pair going on to hook up a total of three times during the course of their lunch breaks
A teacher’s assistant stands accused of initiating an inappropriate relationship with a student. It is alleged that the pair had sex at least three different times during one lunchtime break.
Ocean Valentine was 22 when she first met the teenage student at the Urban Assembly Early College High School of Emergency Medicine in Manhattan back in May of 2022. After this she allegedly lured him into the relationship, with the two using break times to meet up.
Reports from investigations into the incident found that the teaching assistant had told the student — who cannot be named for legal reasons — that she was an active user of Instagram, seemingly asking the student to search her on the social media platform.
The New York Post said the student would go on to find Ocean’s Instagram profile, with the two going on to send messages back and forth. She eventually shared her phone number and the couple began to text each other on other platforms.
Investigators heard from the teenage boy that initially texts were friendly, but soon took a more sexual turn shortly after he got her number in the late spring of 2022. Over time, the pair would go on to have “intercourse” a number of different times in a variety of different places.
In one twisted moment, the aide opted to hook up with the student in his parents’ apartment whilst both were on their respective lunch breaks near the school. The report claimed that while school was still in session, the pair ducked out of their roles in order to get intimate.
This apparently happened another two times, where “[the student] recalled that twice more, they left during lunch period to have intercourse,” according to the report. A separate alleged rendezvous took place in a local pool hall where the pair had gone to celebrate his 18th birthday.
Ocean’s misdeeds were only busted when a female student in the same class as the boy accidentally saw text messages between the two on his phone. She also claimed to have seen a receipt for a hotel, alluding to further planned meet-ups.
The female student was eventually the whistleblower after accidentally blurting out the general premise of Ocean’s relationship with the boy within earshot of an official at the school. She was eventually pulled up on the comments, and after revealing all, an investigation was launched in early 2023.
Phone records from around the time of the alleged relationship showed around 34 different calls between the pair, with six calls taking place on weekends, and another six taking place after 7pm. In light of the alleged relationship, the school suspended Ocean from her job without pay.
In a statement, the US Department of Education said: “Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. That’s why NYC Public Schools’ social media policy makes clear that staff should not communicate with currently enrolled students on their personal social media sites, and should avoid using personal contact information, including cell phone numbers and private messaging apps, to communicate with students.
“We take these standards seriously,” the board added. “And we expect all employees to uphold the highest level of professionalism in their interactions with students.”
