Indonesian park authorities said 26-year-old Brazilian Juliana Marins is still missing and are throwing resources behind finding her. Juliana fell from a hiking trail along Mount Rinjiani in Indonesia early Saturday morning.
Rescue teams are frantically searching for a tourist who fell 300 metres into an active volcano in Indonesia. Juliana Marins, 26, was trekking Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest mountain, when she reportedly slipped and fell from a hiking trail Saturday morning.
The publicist and pole dancer is said to have tumbled 300 metres down the volcano before coming to a stop in a rocky ravine.
Juliana native was spotted by tourists after hearing her screams for help and noticed she wasn’t able to climb back up.
East Lombok Police spokesperson AKP Nikolas Osman said: “While heading to the summit of Rinjani on the way to the Cemara Tunggal area, the victim experienced fatigue and the guide at that time advised her to rest. Then the five guests in the tour group were taken by the guide to continue the journey.
“However, by the time he returned to fetch her, the Brazilian woman was already missing.”
Rescue teams were dispatched to the area after receiving an emergency call shortly after 2.30pm local time. They descended 300 metres but were unable to reach Juliana. They also tried to call her out but did not receive a response.
Rescuers tried to locate her using a drone but found Juliana was no longer in the same place. They’re now are focusing on covering ground towards Lake Segara Anak.
Juliana’s family issued an urgent plea for help and launched an Instagram account dedicated to her rescue which racked up one million followers in 24 hours.
In a post, Juliana’s family criticised the slow pace of the search. They wrote: “A whole day and they advanced only 250 meters below, there were 350 meters left to reach Juliana, and they retreated.”
“We need help, we need the rescue to reach Juliana urgently!”
The Brazilian’s mysterious disappearance has also sparked rumours online. Juliana’s sister Mariana has hit back as a suggestions the Rio de Janeiro native had already been rescued.
She said: “We received, with great concern and apprehension, information that the rescue team took food, water and warm clothing to Juliana. This is not true.
“The information we have is that so far they have not been able to reach her, because the rescue ropes were not long enough, in addition to the low visibility.
“All the videos that were made are lies, including the one of the rescue arriving at her. The video was forged to look like that, along with this message associated with it.
“We even celebrated. It was a shock to find out that it was a lie,” she said.
The Brazilian government has sent representatives to its embassy in Jakarta to monitor the rescue.
Juliana has been on a solo trip across Asia since February and had visited Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, sharing her journey on social media.
Mount Rinjani is an active volcano located on the island of Lombok in Indonesia, standing at 3,700 metres (12,200 feet) and is the highest point in the province of West Nusa Tenggara.
