Prince Harry is set to visit the UK next week, prompting speculation that he may meet with his estranged father, King Charles, for the first time in more than 18 months
Prince Harry is set to visit the UK next week, sparking rumours he may meet with his father, King Charles. The Duke of Sussex, who stepped down from royal duties in 2020 before relocating to the US with wife Meghan Markle, is flying home alone for the WellChild Awards in London – six months after his last trip across the pond.
During that visit, where he lost a High Court appeal over changes to his security arrangements in the UK, he expressed hopes of improving frosty relations with his estranged dad, 76.
However, previous attempts to end the feud between the Duke and his family have been to no avail.
Even after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and news of his father’s cancer diagnosis, Harry has not come back into the fold.
However, it emerged last month that senior aides to the King and the Duke had attended a meeting in London in what was thought to be a step towards restoring the relationship between Harry and his royal relatives.
Some believe this could have been a precursor to a meeting between the father and son, whose last in-person encounter was in February 2024 – when Charles shared his cancer diagnosis.
Following his High Court hearing, Harry expressed fears over how much time his father “has left” and hinted that any chance of a reconciliation rested with his dad.
He claimed Charles “won’t speak to me because of this security stuff.”
Royal expert Katie Nicholl told the Mirror has now said Harry will have to initiate any possible reunion.
“The reason his father is not speaking to him is because he fears that anything he might say will be made public in some shape or form,” she said.
“Let’s not forget that details of private conversations between Harry, Charles and William at an event as intimate as the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral were chronicled in Spare.
She continued: “And so the ball is in Harry’s court to prove that he can earn back his father’s – and his family’s – trust.”
Nicholl does believe there is “still a chance” the pair could air their dirty laundry – and added that a reunion between the father and son was much more likely than one between Harry and William.
“The King is a magnanimous man and not a malicious man, and he’s also a man who wants a relationship with his youngest son, with his daughter-in-law and with the grandchildren,” she said.
