A small town is grieving after nurse Heather Thompson, 32, allegedly shot and killed her two young children and 88-year-old grandmother before taking her own life
A small town has been rocked by a tragic murder-suicide involving a family with two children and a grandparent. The bodies of the victims were discovered during a welfare check.
Nurse practitioner Heather Thompson is accused of fatally shooting her two young sons and her grandmother, aged 88. The 32-year-old healthcare worker allegedly committed the murders before taking her own life, in a devastating case of quadruple murder-suicide, authorities reportedly said.
The horrific scene of the crime was unveiled during a welfare check on January 2, and was discovered by deputies with the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee, USA.
Four bodies were found inside a home in the small city of Waverly, Humphreys County. The bodies appeared to have suffered from fatal gunshot wounds.
They were identified as Arius Thompson, four, Isaiah Johnson, 13, and Evelyn Johnson, 88. Isaiah and Arius’ mum was identified as 32-year-old Heather Thompson.
Investigators have reportedly gathered initial evidence indicating that Heather Thompson may have been responsible for the deaths of her two sons and her grandmother before taking her own life. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis shared that he personally knew the family, who had spent their entire lives in Waverly.
He said: “Here again, small town America. Here again, I know the families.
“So, we’re going to do right by them. We’re going to respect them.
“We’re going to do right by them.” The Sheriff also mentioned that there was no known history of police calls to the residence.
Authorities have reportedly found no evidence implicating anyone else in the incident and have not yet determined a motive. Jeremiah “Biah” Thompson, the father of the late children and estranged ex-husband of Heather, expressed his grief online, writing: “I miss my sons already.
“Daddy still loves you. Sorry, I was at work.”
He also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and to bring his sons to New Mexico, where he lives; the fundraiser has so far collected nearly $11,000 (about £8,700) toward its $16,000 (about £12,700) goal. In a heartfelt post about the day he learned of the loss, Biah wrote: “As a father, it hurt and shattered my soul to hear my sons Arius (Ari), and Isaiah have been taken from me and are no longer with us.”
He added: “They were just babies. Every second of today, I wish I could just wake up.”
Heather Thompson had been employed as a nurse at Ascension Saint Thomas Three Rivers Hospital in Waverly. The motives behind this tragedy are yet to come to light.
