Boris Johnson has condemned Donald Trump’s “absolute flat out lies” about the Ukraine war. He hit out after the US President branded Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” and blamed Ukraine for starting the conflict.
The ex-PM, whose own relationship with the truth has been questioned over the years, said there had been “appalling misrepresentations” about it.
He told LBC today: “It is incredibly painful for people who love Ukraine and who believe in the fundamental innocence of Ukraine such as myself to hear it described as a war that Ukraine started.
“Or to hear that Volodymyr Zelensky is a dictator, or that he kills American journalists or whatever. These things are absolute flat out lies.”
He said the insults hurled at the Ukrainian President are “ghastly to hear” and “complete untruths”.
But he added: “We must, must, must keep our cool and move on and see what I believe Donald Trump is really trying to do.”
He also argued that the UK should commit to spending 3% of GDP on defence. Bozo, who was in No10 when the war broke out in 2022, praised a proposed minerals deal between the US and Ukraine.
He said Ukrainians had “kept their cool” and “negotiated very hard” with Trump after the initial rejection of a deal led to an “awful ratcheting up of the rhetoric against Ukraine”.
The former Tory leader said it contains commitments by America to the “freedom, sovereignty and security of Ukraine” and to “long-term investment”.
He said he hoped PM Sir Keir Starmer would use his meeting with Trump this week to “set out an Anglo-French deterrent force” to help provide security for Ukraine.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said that the US will have to work “very closely together” with the UK and Europe to deliver a lasting peace in the war-torn nation.
Bozo infamously quit Downing Street in 2022 over a report into lockdown-breaking parties. A separate report by the Privileges Committee later found he had deliberately misled Parliament over the Partygate scandal.
