A couple opted to see what a raunchy theatre can be like as they went to the Empire Cinema Club in Huddersfield, believed to be the last dedicated X-rated cinema in the UK

A couple have visited the last raunchy cinema operating in the UK. The pair put on a show during the film, all while strange men watched on in lust.

The Empire Cinema Club is believed to be the last fully operational cinema to display X-rated content in the country, based in Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. Nestled in an unremarkable building, the complex boasts dark rooms that allows punters to get down and dirty.

Several racy cinemas have shut down in recent years due to a gradual reduction in customers, whilst also trying to avoid getting into trouble with the police. However, one couple have tried the cinema for themselves to see what the fuss about the frisky business is all about.

Ditching the popcorn for condoms, the cinema club features a host of dimly-lit rooms and private rooms for couples to get racy in. The Empire first opened its doors all the way back in 1915 as the Empire Picture House, and used to function as a regular movie theatre.

However, during the era of sexual liberation in the 1970s, the cinema changed its tack and instead leaned into showing adult cinema exclusively. This was nothing new for the time, as dedicated porn cinemas were a common thing up and down the country — but eventually shut down or converted back to regular cinemas as time went on.

What made the cinemas even more appealing was that until 2000, hardcore porn was completely illegal to sell or even broadcast, according to the Mirror, but establishments would often use loopholes, branding the theatre as a “membership club” that bypassed these laws.

One couple, eager to see what the last-running dedicated adult theatre was like, visited the Empire Cinema Club for themselves, and were immediately blown away at how discreet the sign is for the business. After paying £10 for their membership, the man was made to pay £8 entry while the woman was allowed in for free.

Once inside, the couple got a taste for what the raunchy cinema would be like, as tight corridors gave way to dimly-lit rooms and tubs filled with condoms for raunchy debauchery. However, despite the dingy feel of the place, the couple noted the cinema was extremely clean, as there was an “overpowering” smell of “industrial cleaning products”.

They eventually stumbled into the screening room, which boasted cinema seats and stripper pole, but was “eerily quiet” for the time. After settling down for the adult film being shown, the couple began to get intimate, getting hot and heavy with each other, before they heard someone enter.

“As we take turns pleasuring each other, doors start to creak open, alerting us to the presence of others,” the woman explained. “I crane my head to get a better look at the crowd encroaching on us, noting, without surprise, that it’s all older men.”

As the heavy petting continued, some of the men appeared to edge closer, prompting the boyfriend to hold off, warning them: “Just watching, please.” As it later turned out, they were the only couple in the theatre, adding if they wanted to get more raunchy they would find a private room; though mid-way through their private moment, they discovered the men had gathered around the room to watch the naughty antics.

Despite the openness of the racy acts going on, the woman was quick to point out that the Sexual Offences Act 2003 still remains in place, technically meaning that any sexual act cannot be carried out in a public area. Reflecting on their time in the cinema, they described their experience as “overwhelming but ultimately fun”.
