There is no way to really defend a 35+ foot game winner. I am not defending his defense but you don't press up on players that far out. If it misses we are talking about how bad of a shot it is. That's a shot players make problaby less than 10% of the time.

Listen. Just because russ didn’t jack quite as many shots as he had in the past, that doesn’t mean he isn’t still taking way too many shots for the level of shooter he is. If you think that does mean that, you would also have to argue that your friend who once stole your money when you left in it his car, and then the next time you left money in his car he said “oh hey bro you dropped your cash” deserves to be praised as an amazing friend just because he didn’t steal your money AGAIN. Why would you praise someone for not being QUITE as much of a shot jacker, if he is still a shot jacker compared to everyone else? In some ways it’s good to only compare yourself against yourself, if you are only focused on self progress, but when it comes to judging a player on his status in the league, it’s not what he does compared to what he used to do, it’s what he does compared to what the other players at his level do.
You really think it’s ok for Russ to be taking more shots than Kyrie Irving? Do you think this is becuse Kyrie doesn’t want to score as much as russ? Or do you think it’s becuse, despite his WANTS, Kyrie understands that him shooting more doesn’t always lead his team to wins. He knows he needs his teammates to FEEL good about themgles and feel like they are having an impact and getting shots. The more you stoke your teammates egos by letting them have their opportunity throughout the season and games, the more they will be willing to lock down on D, be ok with you taking over at the end of games, have your back, go to war with you, and rescpt you at the end of the day. When’s the last time lebron took over 20 shots only shooting 42 percent? When’s the last time Kyrie took over 20 shots shooting 42 percent? Steph? KD? Hell even John Wall!!?! Wall gets owned as being a bad shooter yet he’s the one who actually has shot over 35 percent from 3 in 3 of the last 5 years…and they say about Russ “I mean he did shoot 34 percent that one year, so we know he can be a good shooter from deep”.
How can one player, who is considered to be a better shooter than the other player, be told that their one 34 percent shooting from
Deep season is good while the other player can average 34 percent over his last 6 years and have people say that’s still not good enough. How can one super fast player be told they need to learn to change speeds, and do that, and then still be hated on, while another fast player, who never learns to slow down at all, be praised for how “hard” he plays when really it’s just that he goes 100 speed all the time, exaclty what the other player was criticized for??!!? This ain’t Cuz I’m a wall fan and a russ hater. It’s cuz I’m a fan of fair analysis. Unbiased perspectives. It would be one thing if Wall was considered better than Russ by everyone, but it’s the opposite. Yet still, the player who is considered worse is held to a higher standard than the “better” player!! If y’all will just admit you are biased and narrative driven I can accept that, but as long as we all debate sports with the goal of finding the truth as what’s of utmost importance, I will continue to obsess over the flaws in these narratives. Oh, also, Wall manages to get double digits assists with a much lower usage rate than Russ, but people say he is a ball hog and that’s the only reason he gets high assists. Russ gets double digit assists on almsot record usage rates and people say he can’t be a ball hog becuse he gets so many assists. Wall, to try and grow as a player, lowers his usage and gets off the ball more and his assists go down to 8.9, and people say he’s falling off and not passing as well!!? Russ ups his assists as a way to try and prove his isn’t selfish, which is so backwards and insane, and people still use it as a way to say he isn’t selfish??!? Wall has many years near the top of hockey assists. The thunder have the league leader in asssits, yet almsot always fall in the bottom 5 of team asssits. The warriors never have the league leader in asssits, yet almost alwys lead the league in team asssits. Look, I’m not saying Russ and John are really that different. I think both of their teams would be better off if they focused on moving the ball more. But. Johns advnCed stats clearly show he is much less of a ball hog than Russ, and plays the right way more often. Russ advanced stats clearly show he is about his own numbers. Wall has never taken more than 18 shots a game. Y’all think Russ is a “better” scorer than Wall? Why? Cuz he takes more shots!! If Wall took the shots that Russ takes, he would score the points russ scores. And actually, during walls only real healthy season, he scored over 23 points a game without taking even 19 shots a night. This is all just such bullshit. -

Instead of contesting barely any shots while moving toward the rim for the rebound. Rebounding is a great but not when 9 plus of them are defensive rebounds that your awesome big man can grab. Maybe it would serve your team if better if you used the insane potential you have as a lockdown defender huh? Ohh wait! Here’s the thing…you don’t get any stastiscial credit for being a great defender..but u do get box score credit for points rebounds and assists hmmm…all the intangibles it takes to win don’t really show up in a basic box score, those are all the things russ doesn’t do. Getting assists doesn’t mean you aren’t selfish. Taking on a lesser role, once it is proved that you team is better the less you shoot and the less you have the ball, makes you team better. Yes, Russ is talented, but that doesn’t mean he is talented at everything he WANTS to be talented at. Let me go check how many shots per game the “deferring” Russ averaged this year compared to his peers.. one sec
