Europe came into the final day with a 10-6 lead and needing just four and half points to win.

And they reached the desired number after Mickelson’s tee shot at 16 went into the water and the American conceded the hole.

It capped a stunning three days for Molinari who won all five of his Ryder Cup matches.

Team USA threatened a comeback when Rory McIlroy lost the first singles match of the day against Justin Thomas when he put his ball in the water.

Paul Casey halved his match with Brooks Koepka before Webb Simpson beat Justin Rose 3&2.

Tony Finau then thrashed Tommy Fleetwood 6&4 to make the scoreline 10 1/2 – 9 1/2.

But Thorbjorn Olesen steadied the ship for Europe to beat Jordan Spieth and win his fist point of the event.
