US President Donald Trump is reportedly becoming more and more seriously about his threats to take Greenland from Denmark by force, according to insiders

Donald Trump has reportedly instructed the bosses of the special forces to write up plans for a US invasion of Greenland, as tensions and fears heighten.

The erratic President has floated the idea of taking the world’s largest island for years but it is reported he feels emboldened to make a move for takeover after capturing Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro. Sources have claimed Trump ordered his Joint Special Operations Command to come up with a possible invasion plan, but has reportedly been met with pushback from chiefs of staff. They have allegedly argued a ground invasion of the Danish autonomous territory could be illegal and unlikely to be passed through Congress.

Despite this, policy chiefs around Trump have reportedly encouraged the President to pursue his claims that Greenland could be on his takeover list.

Sources have claimed these advisors, including the controversial Stephen Miller, are desperate to work fast and keep up momentum after the bold kidnapping of Maduro last week, according to the Daily Mail.

Trump yesterday told reporters that the US needed to “own” Greenland to help protect his nation from growing threats from Russia and China, despite cosying up to Putin and President Xi. He has repeatedly claimed the island territory is crucial for the US’ national security and claimed it was “covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place”.

He said: “Countries have to have ownership and you defend ownership, you don’t defend leases. And we’ll have to defend Greenland.”

On the alleged resistance the Trump plans face from inside Washington, a source reportedly said: “They have tried to distract Trump by talking about less controversial measures, such as intercepting Russian ‘ghost’ ships – a clandestine network of hundreds of vessels operated by Moscow to evade Western sanctions – or launching a strike on Iran.”

This comes after a UK minister refused to rule out putting British boots on the ground in Greenland. Sir Keir Starmer has shared his opposition to Trump’s Greenland plans as it would effectively lead to the collapse of NATO, as both the US and Denmark are part of the military alliance.

Westminster is reportedly in talks with allies about a possible NATO mission on the island to guard against Russian aggression – which would be an alternative to Trump invading the island.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, speaking to Sky News, said: “You would expect us to be talking to all our allies in NATO about what we can do to deter Russian aggression in the Arctic Circle.”

She added: “And of course, you know well that we’re a leading member in the Joint Expeditionary Force, which is a coalition of ten like-minded nations who see defence and deterrence in the Arctic Circle, in the high sea, as of being paramount importance.”
