Virgil Abloh has been crowned one of fashion’s kings, but last night on the Off-White runway, it was all about his “queens.” That’s how he graciously described Karlie Kloss, Gigi and Bella Hadid, who wore his clothes with royal aplomb, in a post-show Instagram.
Within a collection dedicated to the idea of racing and speed – a concept personified by the ever-collaborative and forward-thinking Abloh – the fashion was presented on a checkered runway. Winners included an oversized black and white puffer coat, glitter boots (with a matching handbag) and shimmering silver hot pants topped with a midriff-baring cropped blazer.
His streetwear was still there, but it felt like Abloh – who is also artistic director for Louis Vuitton menswear – was striking a balance between his signature hype threads and those that finish first on the red carpet.
Nowhere was that more evident than in the finale of ballgowns worn by his queens. The dresses were flowy, bright, sexy – and styled with sneakers (in Gigi’s case) for a quick getaway.
Long live Abloh’s reign.
