It’s been nearly seven years since HBO dropped Big Little Lies season two, and even longer since author Liane Moriarty published the original book back in 2014. But now that her highly anticipated sequel, Big Little Truths, has been announced, fans will have a chance to catch back up with the secretive suburban moms of Monterey, California before the show’s stacked cast reunites in season three.

“I found it such a joy to return to this beachside town with Celeste, Madeline and Jane,” the New York Times best-selling author said of her next book in a press release. “It felt like I was catching up with old friends. I really hope readers experience that same sense of a reunion. Of course I’ve changed since I wrote Big Little Lies, and the world has changed, so it was fascinating to think about how these characters might have changed too especially as they deal with the challenges of raising teens.”

Here’s everything we know about Big Little Truths—and how it will impact the hit drama starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, and Laura Dern.

Where will Big Little Truths pick back up?

According to the press release, Big Little Truths fast-forwards to the kids of Monterey’s teenage years. “The last time we saw Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata, and Bonnie, their children were just five years old. But now the kids are in high school, with all of the drama that accompanies teendom (goodbye playdates, hello drugs, sex, and alcohol),” reads the press release.

What will the book be about?

Murder, of course! Or at least, something that looks like murder. And as per usual, a man ruins everything. “When a strange man lurks around the school asking supposedly innocent questions and the principal receives a severed human finger in the mail, the community is in an uproar,” the plot description continues. “This tightly connected group will finally have to face the full repercussions of the big little truths they have—and haven’t—shared with their kids, with each other, and with themselves.”

Who is Liane Moriarty?

Just in case you’re not aware, Liane Moriarty isn’t just the brains behind Big Little Lies, she’s the author of 10 New York Times best-selling novels, including the psychological thriller Nine Perfect Strangers, which was adapted for Hulu by Big Little Lies’ own Nicole Kidman.
