Caroline Wozniacki said she was still regularly speaking with good friend and former pro Serena Williams.

Williams famously returned from giving birth to her first daughter Olympia in 2017 and reached four Grand Slam finals, also returning to the top 10 before retiring last year.

Wozniacki has now followed in her friend’s footsteps. After retiring in January 2020, the Dane recently returned to competition three-and-a-half years and two kids later.

Playing in the first Grand Slam event of her comeback, the former world No 1 is now back in the second week of the US Open after beating Jennifer Brady 4-6 6-3 6-1.

And Wozniacki revealed that Williams had been watching along at home. “Yeah, I talk to her all the time. She’s obviously busy now, as well. But we talk all the time. She watched my match today,” she said.

12 months ago, a pregnant Wozniacki was at the US Open to cheer on her friend in what was Williams’ retirement tournament. Looking back on last year, the 33-year-old added: “But last year I was pregnant. I was heavily pregnant, I want to say – what, are we in September – I was eight months pregnant. I was just here to support my friend. Obviously I worked with ESPN. I was doing a lot of commentating and studio stuff.

“I really wanted to support her in her last tournament. That was something very special. I wasn’t really thinking about my own comeback at that point. I was trying to figure out how I’m going to handle two kids.

“It’s been cool that after James was born and I went on court, all of a sudden I go, Okay, well, let’s give it a try. Now we’re here, and that’s pretty special.”
