Liverpool could be about to reignite an old flame and finally sign Willian – nearly seven years after he came close to joining the Reds. The Chelsea winger is a free agent this summer and can therefore speak about his future with other clubs.

Willian has been an admirable servant to Chelsea since joining from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013, winning two Premier League titles.

However, it now appears that the time has come for a new challenge with the player’s representatives unable to reach an agreement with Chelsea.

According to the print edition of Spanish paper Sport (via Sport Witness), Willian is already in talks with Liverpool about the prospect of a move at the end of the season.

Klopp is looking to bring in extra firepower ahead of the 2020/21 campaign with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane off to the Africa Cup of Nations next January.

“I had an unofficial role at the club, trying to persuade some great players to join Liverpool,” Gerrard said.

“It was the same ritual every summer. The club would let me know which long-shot they had in mind then ask me to contact him.

“They thought that a request to consider moving to Liverpool would have more impact coming from me.

“In 2013, the latest player in our sights was Willian. I followed the usual routine when approaching a star player we wanted to sign. Instead of calling him directly I always sent a text. It seemed more respectful.

“I said hello and hoped he didn’t mind me contacting him directly. I stressed how much I admired him as a player and then, having mentioned that I knew Liverpool were speaking to his agent, I used the standard line: ‘If you need to chat or ask any questions I’m available at any time.”

Willian initially chose Tottenham as the club he wanted to sign for, before Chelsea snatched him from the teeth of their London rivals.

Every time Chelsea face Tottenham, the change of heart is lauded by Blues supporters with the chant “he hates Tottenham” to tease Spurs fans.

The wideman would come back to haunt Liverpool on several occasions, scoring the goal to seal the 2-0 victory at Anfield to end the Reds’ title hopes in 2013/14.

He was also on target this season in Chelsea’s FA Cup triumph over the Premier League leaders at Stamford Bridge.
