Someone needs to tell Valverde that many of his players have proven that their talent is best used in a 4-2-3-1, which gives them much more creativity. Frenkie de Jong, Arthur Melo, Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann all played in that formation to great effect for their respective national sides. Barca need to keep their back four for stability and to capitalise on Alba and Semedo’s speed, but Pique, Lenglet or Umtiti need the defensive double pivot. Coutinho and Griezmann can flourish in the 10, Coutinho especially, while Griezmann can take attacking midfield roles left or right effectively. Dembele’s speed can be more effective here with a 10 who can send him off down the flanks, Suarez up front becomes the point man that he can still be, he’s decently fast, a natural poacher and good with his head and his feet for deliveries from the 10, or from out wide. Give Messi a free role down the right when he’s back and he’ll flourish with this structure; a 10 to play with for creativity, Suarez doesn’t have to drop back, the double pivot keeps the defensive side of the game up, and the passing can become incisive. de Jong showed great potential against Bilbao, and in time will be a vital replacement in the deep 6 role Busquets has, but look at his performances with Ajax last season. Most of the time he played double pivot with the more physical, defensive Schone beside him. Busquets can play that role, freeing de Jong to start attacks higher up the pitch.
