I think your second opinion is the actual thing happening here. Think about it from a marketing decision. Mlb the show will get put under and even bigger spotlight than ever before announcing a player of this caliber’s signing. It just builds a whole new hype around the game. Plus, since Harper’s future was uncertain when making him the cover athlete, it would only make sense that SDS would have inside information so they could start producing their new cover and any trailer/marketing strategies that they would like to perform. If it turns out to be anything else, it kind of hinders their whole post from today.

That would be absolutely insane if Harper unveiled his new team via MLB The Show!! Though unlikely that would be great marketing for the game. And in the future other sports game might actually copy something that MLB The Show does for once by revealing a big players free agency on a video game cover.
