With excitement around the NBA Finals and the World Cup converging at the same time, jerseys have suddenly become the hottest trend of the summer. As such, celebrities and style stars have been graciously showing us new and unexpected ways to wear a jersey that go beyond the usual game-day outfit formulas.

Take Nina Dobrev, for example. Dobrev proves that all you need is a pair of scissors and a keen eye to elevate your jersey style. While attending Game 3 at Madison Square Garden this week, the star wore her jersey cropped and hemmed, with the arm holes made larger as well. It looks to me like someone took a seam ripper and removed the stripes that usually go around the shoulders, leaving just enough space for her black bralette to peek through.

The other half of the outfit is the perfect pair of slouchy jeans. Whether you’re watching from a sports bar, the comfort of your couch, or in the actual stands, you’ll likely be standing and sitting and standing and sitting. So yeah, roomy pants are a requirement.

As for accessories, Nina Dobrev kept it simple. Black sunglasses, a chain necklace, heeled booties that allow for socks (so as not to get blisters during the aforementioned jumping and cheering), and a white sweater in case it gets cold. I do think her choice of wired earbuds with just one earbud in adds an extra layer of cool. There’s something about half paying attention to your surroundings and half paying attention to what you’re listening to that’s undeniably so New York, no?
