ZX Spectrum fans must be in absolute heaven now, especially following the latest hardware announcement. Just days after the release of the superb Spectrum White Edition, retro gaming fans have been treated to the news that ZX Spectrum and C64 handhelds are releasing later this year. HyperMegaTech has announced plans to release The C64 Handheld and The Spectrum Handheld this October, priced at £109.99 each. There are also a limited number of Collector’s Edition handheld consoles, which also have an October 15 release date, but come with a slightly steeper £129.99 price tag.

Both handhelds have 25 built-in games, including old-school classics and modern homebrew releases.

Unlike previous HyperMegaTech handhelds that kind of resemble the original Game Boy, the C64 and Spectrum devices feature a clamshell case design more in line with the Game Boy Advance SP.

They also feature 4.3-inch screens with a resolution of 800×480, as well as a selection of standard face buttons and mappable plastic/rubber function buttons.

While they don’t have the Evercade cartridge functionality of past HyperMegaTech handhelds, the new devices contain MicroSD slots for adding your own ZX Spectrum and C64 games.

I also really like the colour schemes, which hearken back to the original ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 home computers.

Limited to just 2,000 units each, the Collector’s Editions contain copies of either Zzap 64 or Crash Magazine, as well as hard cover cases and exclusive packaging.

• Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe

• Hunter’s Moon Remastered

• Avenger: The Way of the Tiger II

• Sorcerer Kid Adventure

• Where Time Stood Still
