Kathryn Bigelow has done it again, and this time with a harrowing nuclear war thriller that will leave no viewer indifferent. The Oscar-winning director, also known for films like The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, has made quite the return with A House of Dynamite, a terrifying nuclear war thriller starring Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, and Tracy Letts. The film premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2025, and was released on Netflix on October 24, 2025.
The film imagines a chillingly realistic nightmare scenario. When an unidentified enemy launches an intercontinental ballistic missile towards Chicago, senior figures inside the US government are given just 18 minutes to decide how to respond and whether the world survives the consequences.
Rather than following a single hero, A House of Dynamite is divided into three chapters, each retelling the same escalating crisis from a different perspective. The structure intensifies the suspense, revealing new information with each retelling and pushing the audience closer to the moment of potential annihilation.
The tension is further amplified by Volker Bertelmann’s haunting score, the composer who won an Oscar for All Quiet on the Western Front. His music pulses beneath every decision, making even moments of silence feel unbearable.
Film critic Nicholas Barber at the BBC said the film is “more riveting than most thrillers, and more terrifying than most horror films.”
At the Daily Express, Film and Music Editor, George Simpson, gave the film four stars and called it “terrifying.” He wrote: “Almost a decade on from her last movie and Kathryn Bigelow is back with another incredibly realistic geo-political thriller, complete with shaky cam.
“The Oscar-winner stunned the world with The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, and she’s done it again with A House of Dynamite over at Netflix.”
Another person wrote: “A House of Dynamite is another proof of how great a director Kathryn Bigelow is and by far one of the most intense and nerve-wracking movies of the year – scarier than most horror films out there. It presents a fictional scenario so real that it will leave you speechless and on the edge of your seat until the very last second.
“Superbly written, acted, shot, and edited, the film shines in every department, complete with a fittingly thrilling score. Its narrative is ingeniously crafted to build tension and truly put you in the shoes of the characters, making you ask yourself: What would I do? How would I react?
“Despite an open ending that will likely divide viewers – something I usually dislike – here it feels so intentional and well-executed that I actually loved it. The film’s message is clear, direct, and deeply resonant. Everyone should see this movie and take its message to heart.”
One viewer gave the film a perfect 10/10 score on IMDb and said it was “brilliant” and like “nothing else.” They added: “Finally a film that shows us the predicament this world has gotten itself into and with the current situation how it could all end in a matter of 15 minutes!
“From start to finish I was held captive, totally within the film as if I was a bystander. This film is a masterpiece and should be watched by all.”
