Donald Trump wants America to start making tiny cars which he described as ‘really cute and beautiful’ despite safety concerns from federal transport regulators
President Donald Trump has reportedly become enamoured with the concept of ‘tiny’ cars, so much so that he’s ordered the US to start building the ‘really cute and beautiful’ vehicles.
After drawing inspiration from Japan’s Kei compacts, the president has developed somewhat of a fondness for the micro-gars, and gushed about them to reporters in the White House.
He said: “They’re very small, they’re really cute, and I said, ‘How would that do in this country?’ It’s sort of like the Beetle used to be with the Volkswagen.” It comes after Trump was handed the first ever FIFA Peace Prize for his role in ‘ending wars.’ So far, the miniature cars have been banned in the US by federal transport regulators over safety concerns.
However, Trump told Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy: “We’re not allowed to make them in this country, and I think you’re gonna do very well with those cars, so we’re gonna approve those cars.”
He also reinforced his love for ‘tiny cars’ and posted on Truth Social that he “just approved TINY CARS to be built in America” and told manufacturers to “START BUILDING THEM NOW!”
He also added that they are “inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient and, quite simply, AMAZING!!!”
The transport secretary backed Trump’s rallying call, and told CNBC: “If there’s a market for those vehicles, I want to give our manufacturers the opportunity to build those cars. It’s going to clear the deck, clear the rules and let them build those small cars.
Vehicles that work in cities, and if that’s where you drive, it could be a great solution for you. And by the way, much more affordable than other options that are on the market today.”
He then added: ” Are they going to work on the freeways? Probably not.”
As well as that, Trump plans to roll back on changes to try and push Americans towards EVs, something championed by the former Biden Administration. About the changes, Trump said: “This was a green new scam.”
Ford CEO Jim Farley, who attended Wednesday’s conference, supported the president’s decision to roll back those changes, according to CNN.
He said: “As America’s largest auto producer, we appreciate President Trump’s leadership in aligning fuel economy standards with market realities,” Farley said.
“We can make real progress on carbon emissions and energy efficiency while still giving customers choice and affordability. This is a win for customers and common sense.”
