- The Kremlin has confirmed that US special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to visit Moscow next week. Vladimir Putin claimed Russia is ready for ‘serious’ peace talks.
- Last week a plan to end the war by Donald Trump was made public – although it attracted criticism for being heavily in Russia’s favour. At the weekend US and Ukrainian officials met in Geneva, and Volodymyr Zelensky said the plan may be ‘workable’. But many points need to be resolved.
- Under Trump’s plan, Russia would get to keep all of the eastern Donbas region – more than a tenth of which is in Ukrainian hands. On top of that Kyiv would have to reduce the size of military significantly, from around 880,000 troops to 600,000.
- The Russian President went on to say that Donald Trump’s proposals may be a basis for future agreements. But he said there are currently no ‘final versions’.
- Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, insisted that Kremlin officials haven’t officially received the initial US peace proposal. But the Kremlin has seen a copy obtained through back channels.
- Overnight Russia launched a drone attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. At least 50 buildings were damaged, and 19 people wounded.
