Dieda agrees, adding, “Ask for a soft, textured pixie with movement through the crown and a little length on top so you have something to play with. The magic word is lived-in. You don’t want it too cropped or too severe—you want it to look like you woke up like this, even if it took 10 minutes to style. And please, find a stylist who will actually look at your face shape and texture before they start cutting. This is not a one-size-fits-all situation.”

It’s the “sandwich styling” method at work. Basically, the idea is to match the top in color or volume to your shoe—the “bread”—while the middle (pants, skirt, etc.) functions as the meat of this outfit “sandwich.” You can do it by matching your scarf to your socks, your headband to your shoes, your sweater to your…you get it. These prices are nearly impossible to beat.

Typically, summer dressing requires significant wardrobe adjustments as the weather outside takes a turn for the sweltering. Heavy knitwear and coats get packed away in plastic until the fall, while slinky summer slip dresses and breezy linen take center stage. Jeans, of course, still occupies an important space in most fashion editors’ summer wardrobes, though white jeans and light-weight denim make it to the top of the pile while black and gray jeans in more rigid denim are often reserved for nights out at a bar.

That’s not the case for Katie Holmes. On June 5, the 47-year-old actor debuted a choppy shoulder-length bob during an outing in New York City wearing a pair of gray cigarette jeans and not-so-basic white knit tee. The result reads more like “it’s a quiet day of in-office meetings,” which is where a lot of personal style seems to be heading in 2026 as we look for ways to rethink casual staples. To that point: We’re making track shorts into an It item. Granny sandals are having their moment, just after grandpa shoes had theirs. Just a day before Wilde, on the opposite coast, glam-queen Rihanna stepped out in a basic trench coat, jeans, a baseball cap, and sneakers. People are dressing for real life, which is how a gray hoodie starts showing up outside the gym and, honestly, we’re all for it.

“Sage green feels earthy, calming, and unexpectedly sophisticated for summer. It’s softer than brighter greens but still gives that cool fashion-person energy people are drawn to right now,” says Fujita. As a mellow transitional spring-to-summer shade, “this is a great option, if you’re looking to deviate from your signature color,” Meesh says. “It’s pretty neutral but still adds an extra bit of excitement.” Messick loves to mix this soft and bold hue with simple color-blocking nail art. “Simply paint your entire nail with sage as your base and grab a fun, bright pink to add colorful, simple shapes.” However, if you’re looking for a more muted look, Fujita recommends a simple glossy finish because “it lets the color feel fresh instead of overly trendy.”

The curious thing is that these pants aren’t exactly new. Long before becoming trendy, bloomers were part of 19th-century women’s underwear. They were worn under voluminous skirts and long dresses as a functional and intimate garment. Today, however, the opposite is true, and they are deliberately displayed as current fashion trends have brought to the surface what was once forced to be hidden. They evoke that romantic femininity that fashion cyclically revives when the present becomes too rigid.

The most stylish insiders have already made them an obsession. Some pair them with bikinis and open shirts for a Mediterranean vibe; others wear them with satin ballet flats, tops, or oversized men’s jackets to create contrast. Mariska Hargitay proved Adidas Sambas are still the perfect summer sneakers.

Earlier this week, Hargitay pulled off the ultimate flex, posing in front of the Hudson Theater wearing nearly the same outfit she wore in the posters for her Broadway debut in Every Brilliant Thing. Hargitay switched out her white cardigan for a cropped white button-up, which she paired with similar black mom jeans. She even styled her fresh summer bob with the same middle part and loose, face-framing waves, though she added a pair of square sunglasses to block out the sun and camera flashes.

Nostalgic mom jeans are in the middle of a resurgence for good reason. With their high waistline and relaxed tapered silhouette, these ’80s-inspired jeans are flattering on multiple body types and pretty easy to style with a variety of wardrobe staples and shoes. However, Hargitay taught an advanced lesson by opting for a trickier pair of ankle jeans.

With any shoe that requires a visible sock suddenly off the table, the Law & Order: SVU star was left with few options: Most sandals and boots would throw off the proportions, while heels would instantly create a more formal result.
