The bass is turned up and the lights are back on at 140 Stewart Avenue in Williamsburg.

Avant Gardner, formerly home to the iconic Brooklyn Mirage, has been taken over by global nightlife brand Pacha Group. And if there’s one thing Pacha has proven, it’s that New York’s house music scene isn’t merely revived — it just might be louder than ever before.

Last year, the sprawling 80,000-square-foot venue came crumbling to the ground after an ambitious $30 million renovation plan was halted over safety concerns. City officials cited “potentially unsteady, combustible, illegal” conditions for a 6,000-person capacity space, which led to Avant Gardner’s forced cancellation of their entire slate of summer shows before filing for bankruptcy.

To say fans were upset would be an understatement. In a city saturated with small clubs, intimate Hip-Hop rooms, and subterranean rave spots, large-scale electronic music venues have become few and far between and many feared Mirage’s closure marked the end of an era for true house music heads.

A few long months later, Pacha swept in at the eleventh hour. The company behind the Dubai-based brand, Five Holdings, purchased the East Williamsburg venue for a reported $110 million in January. And in less than half a year, delivered what many thought was impossible: a new era of nightlife for NYC.

Pacha has already unveiled an impressive summer program, with high-profile sets from fan favorites like ZHU, Lost Frequencies, BLOND:ISH, and ANOTR. Opening weekend was led by British electronic figure Michael Bibi alongside South African house luminary and Pacha regular, Black Coffee.

The brand, known for its stripped-back approach to nightlife, keeps the focus squarely on the music. From its iconic twin cherries logo to no-frills, dance floor-first design — low lighting, minimal staging, no chintzy decor — Pacha Group favors reducing spectacle to amplify sound, and properly frame the DJ.

As my more knowledgeable house music friends have put it, a Pacha show is “something you just have to experience once in your life.” And, with its arrival in New York, there was little excuse to miss opening weekend.

I stepped inside for Black Coffee’s set on Sunday night to see what it’s all about.

As one industry source noted, Pacha may have been waiting for the precise moment to land in NYC — and from the looks of it, they stuck the landing.

Upon arrival, Black Coffee’s opener Shimza was already in motion, weaving Rüfüs Du Sol’s “Innerbloom” through a crowd swaying in near-unison, fully absorbed in the electronic symphony. A newly modernized LED installation and sweeping sight-lines reinforced the venue’s immense scale, while expanded VIP areas and flowing bottles underscored the feeling of elevated service.

Two friendly Pacha reps guided me through the space, tequila sodas in hand. First, we strolled through the main floor where melting visuals and pulses of kinetic light overhead. The GA space felt surprisingly breathable even for a sold-out show, a welcome break from the usual shoulder-to-shoulder crush you dare to shove through.

Look up and you’ll see the space opens up to multiple rooftop areas, including an elevated platform that puts guests eye-to-eye with the staggering visual installation (arguably the best view in the house, though you’ll need a VIP ticket if you want to get down from that vantage point).

On either side of the stage, bars and a curated food program serve everything from late-night munchies to fancy hand-rolls from Shiro Sushi, which somehow makes the whole experience feel less like a sweaty rave and more like a sexy yet upscale, well-curated hospitality experience.

Our tour wraps as we’re led through a striking — and slightly hedonistic — red backstage corridor that leads us directly to the DJ booth, encircled on all sides by VIP tables. The bass hits hardest here; vibrations traveling from floor to bone.

Staff smiled more than usual, security was efficient without ever becoming overbearing, and the crowd size remained manageable throughout the night. Kabir Mulchandani, CEO of Five Holdings, previously explained the decision to lower capacity to reduce risk, emphasizing “safety is the first priority,” and there was no point at which I doubted his claim. 

But what stood out most wasn’t the renovations, polished production or elevated sound quality but the absence of the performative energy that had snuck into past iterations of the famed venue.

The crowd at Pacha wasn’t just your usual mix of club feens, influencers and clout-chasers. The newest iteration of the space felt as if it were built more for die-hard house music fans, the lifers. Even with Travis Scott and Pete Davidson orbiting nearby, that low-key celeb presence feels more incidental in a space that’s somehow pulled off the neat trick of being cool without trying.

Paired with a seasoned selector like Black Coffee, the effect becomes hypnotic. His Afro-house blends — think “Rapture” with &ME, the soulful “Sete” x “Gorah” mash-up, and Latin-infused “NUEVAYoL” remix — spin with surgical precision, which becomes even more impressive when I’m reminded that he often performs with just one hand, due to an old injury in his left arm.

Black Coffee is a master of restraint, mood-setting and stage presence. His sets are tribal and minimal, slow-burning yet propulsive, built in waves that roll over you rather than crash down on you. One TikTokker espoused that if house music is a religion, he is the prophet. And in this case, Pacha is easily the temple.

He’s arguably the ideal artist to open Pacha, and the irony is not lost when I’m told that Avant Gardner still owes him $1.87 million from last summer’s canceled shows. Fans were clearly glad to have the Umlazi native back. The backstage area was packed with people vying for a closer view, everyone wanting a piece of him. Fortunately, the two-entry setup kept the crowd decently spaced out so the space never became too claustrophobic. 

A great show at the right venue can feel like it breaks the time-and-space continuum and somehow Pacha miraculously made that happen on their opening weekend. You step through the door, and the next thing you know, you’re checking your phone at 3 a.m., wondering where the time went, with Black Coffee nodding along to a beat just one barricade away. 

Final verdict: The new Pacha Group feels less about being seen and more about the music. Less Instagram crowd, more underground dance party. A space for serious music lovers. Yes, there’s a faint trace of nostalgia, but no bitterness — just a breath of fresh air: a reunion and reinvention all at once.

A “masterpiece” war film is now streaming on Amazon Prime as film fans say it is as good as Saving Private Ryan. The movie in question was released in 1977 and was directed by legendary filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. The Robocop and Basic Instinct director filmed Soldier of Orange just a few years before his string of acclaimed ’80s movies.

Soldier of Orange stars Rutger Hauer and has been hailed by film buffs as one of the finest war films ever made. The film is set in the Netherlands during WW2 and follows Hauer in what Newsweek described at the time as a “superb war epic”.

One fan of the film made an unlikely comparison between Soldier of Orange and watching a football game. The viewer shared: “I just watched Soldier of Orange, and I’m absolutely fascinated. It’s a typical war flick in many senses, but it’s probably one of the best ever made, if not THE ONE.

“My heartfelt thanks and congratulations go to the entire crew who made this masterpiece. For 156 minutes, I was a young Dutchman wanting my country to be saved from the Nazis! After some point, it was like watching a football game.

“I usually try to mention the slightest flaw in a movie when I write a comment on here, no matter how much I liked it. But this time, I won’t be able to, because this movie simply has no flaw at all.”

Another viewer called it a fascinating adaptation of true events. They wrote: “This is an excellent adaptation of a true story of university students reacting to World War II. The population of Holland lived a naive existence, believing that they were not involved.

“When the war came to them, they were horribly naive and unprepared. The only possibility was to work with the resistance. By the war’s end, only two of the original group (Erik and Jack) were still alive.

“The whole story is there: danger, how people were forced into collaborating, how others willingly collaborated, torture at the hands of the Gestapo, death the penalty for getting caught, how Erik survived.”

Soldier of Orange was critically acclaimed on release and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language film in 1977. It lost out to the Italian period drama, A Special Day.

Microsoft has unveiled the next batch of titles joining its Xbox Game Pass subscription service in the second half of the month and early in July. While it’s not a terrible line-up, it’s certainly weaker than some of the offerings from the past few months, both in terms of quality and quantity.

The two highest profile games on the list are annual football sim EA FC 26 and Call of Duty Vanguard. Available from June 18, EA FC 26 joins Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass through EA Play. It’s a timely release given the World Cup has just kicked off in North America, and the big international tournament recently made its debut.

Prior to the release of EA FC 26, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass players will be able to check out Call of Duty Vanguard, which makes its debut on June 17.

The game takes place across multiple fronts in World War II, featuring stages set in North Africa, France and Stalingrad.

It also contains a wealth of multiplayer modes, not to mention Zombies action for fans of co-op multiplayer.

The releases continue on June 25, when fans will be able to play Abyssus for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass.

Described as a “roguelite brinepunk adventure”, Abyssus is an underwater first-person shooter for one to four players.

Co-operative adventure game RV There Yet? is next to be released, making its Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass debut on June 30.

Microsoft has a decent surprise in store for fans in early July, when Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 comes to Premium.

An brilliantly addictive skating game, the remake features nearly 20 different parks and more than 30 skaters.

All the locations have been remade in stunning 4K, and without losing the iconic gameplay that made the series so popular back in the late 90s and beyond.

The next wave of releases end with the launch of 2.5D Metroidvania game Winds of Arcana: Ruination, which comes to Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass on July 6.

The film’s synopsis reads: “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant follows US Army Sergeant John Kinley (Gyllenhaal) and Afghan interpreter Ahmed (Salim). After an ambush, Ahmed goes to Herculean lengths to save Kinley’s life. When Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given safe passage to America as promised, he must repay his debt by returning to the war zone to retrieve them before the Taliban hunts them down first.”

Sean Sagar, Jason Wong, Rhys Yates, Christian Ochoa, Bobby Schofield, Emily Beecham, Jonny Lee Miller, Alexander Ludwig, Reza Diako, James Nelson-Joyce, Antony Starr and Fariba Sheikhan star alongside Gyllenhaal and Salim.

The film was met with a positive reaction and has an impressive 98% score from audience reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes who state: “Come to Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant for the action – stay for some fantastic performances and a story that honours wartime sacrifices.”

This means that Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant has a higher popcorn score than Saving Private Ryan, which the audience rates at 98%.

Movie theatres are horsing around with fans.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is coming to theaters on July 17, and to excite moviegoers, they’ve released a Trojan Horse Popcorn Bucket that requires customers to open a secret hatch on the horse to access their popcorn.

The location of the hatch is sparking funny commentary on social media. “Why is it in a dick pouch?” commented an X user on the announcement post for the bucket.

Turning to souvenir popcorn buckets and movie merchandise is a smart way to incentivize people to actually go to the movies in the world of streaming.

The popcorn bucket prop phenomenon is the latest — and wildly successful — trend in novelty concessions to bait fans. Past popcorn pushes have featured the designer-esque handbag for “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” the $65 corvette popcorn vessel for “Barbie” and the “Mission: Impossible” bucket that needed a key to unlock.

The moviegoer swag market has skyrocketed since the inception of collectible popcorn buckets, as AMC recorded sales of over to over $54 million annually in the mid-2020s — compared to their reportedly $0 revenue in 2018, Time reported in November 2025.

However, a plastic horse with a popcorn pouch that is inconvenient to eat out of may not be the solution for moviegoers.

“Amazing. Now release the cyclops face bucket where I can eat out of the eyeball,” another X user wrote.

The bucket will be available in-theater at Regal, AMC and Cinemark locations. The Trojan Horse bucket is the second collectible for the film, the first being the IMAX Film Camera Popcorn Bucket, which sold out on its first day.

Commenters are not only criticizing the bucket’s design, but also the size. “Smallest popcorn content of all time,” one Instagram user wrote in the comments of the bucket-reveal post. And someone on X asked, “What is this? A popcorn bucker for ants??”

The Trojan Horse is an iconic object in the story of “The Odyssey,” as the Greeks constructed a giant wooden horse, hid soldiers inside and presented it as a gift to Troy, whose citizens did not know who was inside. Instead of hiding soldiers, this wooden horse conceals your popcorn so you don’t spill any in the theater.

“You open it and a small army of tiny men run out and stab you,” another Instagram user joked.

A ‘flawless masterpiece’ that starts a series of films based on one of the most influential novels is currently surging up the Netflix charts.

At the time of writing, two entries from The Hobbit trilogy currently hold places in the top 10 most watched films among subscribers.

That includes the first entry in seventh place and second title in 10th. The concluding third film, is probably not much behind those two.

Peter Jackson returned to direct the films once again set in Middle-earth following the success of his Lord of the Rings trilogy. While The Hobbit only consisted of one book, the story was split into three titles to make another epic on screen saga.

They hit the big screen between 2012 and 2014, with all three now streaming on Netflix. That includes An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies.

The films are based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel The Hobbit. However Jackson also took inspiration from the appendices to his 1954–55 The Lord of the Rings series, which expand on the story told in the original book.

According to its synopsis, the over arching story across the three films sees Bilbo Baggins join a hardy group of dwarves on a dangerous quest to reclaim their lost kingdom. On this journey he comes across Orcs, the fearsome dragon Smaug, and even meets a strange creature named Gollum along his way.

Former Sherlock and The Office actor Martin Freeman leads the cast as Bilbo Baggins. He is joined by some recognisable names, even though their characters might mean their faces are not the most familiar straight away.

Star of multiple Harlan Coben adaptations Richard Armitage also stars as Thorin, who leads the Dwarf company. Other Dwarves in the group are played by the likes of Graham McTavish, Aidan Turner, Ken Stott and James Nesbitt.

A number of Lord of the Rings stars also return to reprise their roles, either in special appearances or cameos. That includes Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis, Lee Pace, Cate Blanchett and Christopher Lee to name a few.

While the Hobbit films did not manage to register a high a score as the Lord of the RIngs trilogy according to their Rotten Tomatoes ratings, there are still fans that rate it just as highly, if not more.

One fan went so far to post on Reddit claiming: “Despite their flaws, the Hobbit trilogy is better than the Lord of the Rings trilogy.”

They explained: “The main reason is because the characters are better adapted from the books. Martin Freeman was perfect as Bilbo; he feels like a faithful portrayal of Bilbo from the book. He shines every scene which focusses on him, though he gets sidelined too much.”

While a fair amount of people disagreed with this post, someone else offered a slightly different viewpoint. They suggested: “Watched The Hobbit recently, the production, the directing, the fighting scenes, I was like this is better than Game of Thrones.”

One fan seemed to acknowledge that it might not be better but should still be considered higher than some view it. They replied: “The Hobbit is an underrated gem that gets overshadowed by the greatness of Lord of the Rings. I would score this a 9/10 and strongly recommend it.”

Another added: “An almost flawless masterpiece. Captured the feeling of the book and transcended it onto a screen. The acting was amazing – perfectly fitting into fantasy style. The chemistry between actors was more than just the obvious – you could actually feel their interactions and live the story. Yes, it was that good.”

The Hobbit collection is streaming on Netflix

Sara Bareilles won’t have to “Waitress” this year.

The two-time Grammy winner just extended her forthcoming ‘The Good Grief Tour’ in support of her forthcoming record with the same name.

She’ll now play 26 concerts at music halls, theatres, performing arts centers and auditoriums all over North America from early September through late October.

That includes two concerts at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall. Those gigs are slated to take place:

“Good Grief,” Bareilles’ seventh studio album and first since 2019’s “Amidst the Chaos” hits shelves on Aug. 28.

Ahead of the record’s release, the “Girls5Eva” star dropped a pair of singles: the reflective “Home” and winsome “Salt Then Sour Then Sweet” with Brandi Carlile.

Bareilles called the album “a love letter to the hardest chapter of my life” on social media and noted that “Home” “was inspired by a vulnerable and honest conversation about grief between Anderson Cooper and Stephen Colbert that really resonated with me.”

This upcoming run will be the Eureka native’s first official outing — other than a handful of short stints on the road in 2023, ’24 and ’25 — in seven years.

On that nationwide trek, Bareilles often performed 20-22 songs per show, according to Set List FM.

Notable fan favorites that often made the cut include “Love Song,” “Brave,” “She Used To Be Mine,” “Gravity” and “Saint Honesty.”

Ahead of the release of “Good Grief,” Bareilles has shared two singles.

“Home” is Bareilles at her rawest, most stripped-down, honest self. The vulnerable song touches on the early passing of a father — Bareilles’ dad is still alive at least as of January 2025 — and paints vivid pictures of what happens in the wake of the death of a loved one. Somehow, even with its heartbreaking message, the music remains hopeful and even optimistic. Grab a hanky for this one.

Bareilles’ “Salt Then Sour Then Sweet” duet with Brandi Carlile also deals with heavy subject matter. Lyrics like “Grief is the singer in my band/She’s a passenger van/And a shortcut straight to the truth” cut through the noise and straight into the heart. On a sonic level, the pleasant, plodding instrumentals complement the weightiness quite well; if you’re not listening too closely, one could easily mistake this track for a wispy, breezy good-time tune.

It’s enough for him to Scream.

Actor and comedian Jamie Kennedy expressed astonishment at the dramatic shift in odds away from Spencer Pratt in the Los Angeles mayoral election.

The “Scream” star, who supports Pratt, shared a post on Friday showing that socialist city Councilmember Nithya Raman had a 95% chance of advancing to November’s general election despite Pratt still maintaining a lead with votes still being counted.

“This is a literal crime scene,” he wrote. “There is no way this is an honest election.”

Oddsmakers had recently given Pratt more than a 75% chance to advance out of the primary.

Raman and Pratt are competing for the final spot to make the runoff against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, who is already projected to advance.

On Saturday, Los Angeles County was still slowly and painstakingly processing thousands of uncounted ballots. With 71% of the votes counted, Pratt held 28.2% of the share while Raman trailed with 24.9%.
